Summary: Things left unspoken aren't necessarily unexpressed.

Shortly after his triumphant return from the hospital they’d resumed their traditional outings, which by that point had grown to include the occasional karaoke night. She’d resisted the idea at first, but he’d been persistent. To his credit, he never pressured her to sing and only lightly teased her about her secret pop princess past. He’d even taken to singing outrageously over-the-top renditions of eighties power ballads just to make her laugh

She looked at him quizzically as he returned to his seat, slightly drained from the exertion of his performance. If there was one thing anybody could safely say about Barney Stinson, it was that he never did things halfway.

“REO Speedwagon? Not exactly part of your usual repertoire.”

He reached for his drink. ”I thought I’d switch it up a little. You know what they say about variety.” She rolled her eyes as he smirked.

Later, he pulled her up on stage to help him sing a Bon Jovi number that was never meant to be a duet. Somehow they rocked it anyway.

The night she announced her multi-continental career move, she drank far more than the customary amount for someone who was celebrating and not drowning sorrows. Slowly but surely, the others had drifted home to sleep off their own indulgences, leaving it to him to see her safely back to her apartment.

“Admit it.” She was only slurring her words a little, which was somewhat impressive under the circumstances. “You’re gonna miss me.”

He said nothing as he hooked an arm around her waist and guided her outside, letting her ramble nonsensically about dogs and television as they climbed into a cab and headed off towards Brooklyn. He tried to tell himself that the way she curled up against his side was merely a means of physical support and not an expression of any sort of affection.

“You know, this could end up being something really big.” She poked him, pouting as he gently took her hand and moved it away. “You’re lucky I’m your friend.”

He sighed into her hair as she rested her head on his shoulder, humming an unrecognizable tune. “Yeah. I am.”

The days passed by as they always did until it was time for Robin’s departure. Her hands were clasped tightly in her lap during the ride to the airport, but her apprehension was invisible to all but the most astute observer. He found it ironic that even though he practically made a hobby out of studying the expressions and body language of women, the one sitting next to him was still something of an enigma.

He was content to let the others do the talking as the New York scenery passed by. Even if he was prepared to make a bold, dramatic confession of his true feelings (which wasn’t going to happen because he wasn’t and would never be that guy, accidental epiphanies be damned) he sure as hell wasn’t going to do it in the back of a cramped taxi surrounded by four other people..

By the time everyone said their final (for now) goodbyes, the others were giving him odd looks. Lily nudged him in passing and nodded at him pointedly. “You’ve been pretty quiet, Barney. Isn’t there something you want to say to Robin?”

“Yes, there is.” He watched as she bit her lip, a gesture that he knew indicated confusion and vulnerability. He had no idea why, but seeing those cracks in her Tough Girl armor did strange things to him.

“I’m really proud of you.”

He could tell Lily was disappointed, but the smile Robin was giving him made it difficult for him to care.

She called him a week later in tears, unable to sleep because of the homesickness that was almost a physical ache. The time difference meant it was the middle of the afternoon in New York, but he wasn’t about to remind her of that fact. Instead, he locked himself in his office to talk her down. Negotiations with the Chinese firm could wait.

“It was okay at first, you know? But now everything just feels wrong. I barely speak the language, the food is weird, I’m taller than everyone I work with-“

“Okay, calm down. This is perfectly normal. You’ve been there long enough that the excitement is wearing off and the culture shock is kicking in. It’ll pass.”

Her voice was shaky, but he thought she’d stopped crying. “How do you know?”

“Because no bro par excellence of Barney Stinson’s is going to let a minor setback like this keep her from following her dreams. Even if you weren’t awesome enough on your own, you’d totally win by association.”

That got a laugh out of her, as he’d expected it would. “Thanks, Barney.”

“Any time.”

It was a year later, and everything had changed.

Well, not everything. Ted still argued with Marshall about his made-up words, Lily was still courageously battling her addiction to clearance sales, and Robin was still on a quest for meaningful employment that didn’t involve inconsequential news or horrific puns. But changes had happened, and over the past several months their relationship had grown into something he couldn’t easily define. All he knew was that he didn’t want it to end, which was a huge enough change by itself.

He watched her as she shifted in her sleep, worn out after a long day (and night). She looked amazing, even by the dim filtered street light. Carefully moving a lock of her hair, he leaned over and whispered the three words he still couldn’t quite bring himself to say to her face.

She sighed softly and leaned into his arms. It was enough for now.

Aww! This was super sweet. It really captured their friendship/possible relationship. I like how he talked her back to sanity when she was upset. Somehow I can see that happening..but maybe that is just wishful thinking on my part.

I loved it! Thanks for sharing!!

Hey, he's already done it once. :) Even if that did end rather unexpectedly.

Glad you enjoyed!

True story. I can't believe I almost forgot about that! A clear sign that the end result was too mind shattering, or that it is late. :P In all honesty though, Barney comforting Robin is my favorite. It's funny and at the same time super sweet.

I did! You better write more!

It totally is. He's been so supportive of her this season... he doesn't get as much credit as he deserves sometimes.

And I plan to. :) ... After sleep.

*grin* Shippy, in-character, and fun, but without being filled to the brim with fluff. HOW IS THIS DONE?? Brilliant and lovely, and thanks so much for this great story!

Beautifully written. Gorgeously poignantly sweet. I love this! I love the ending more than anything. Barney and Robin having such an undefinable but loving relationship just... ROCKS!

You're awesome.

What a lovely story-- I loved the dynamic between the two of them, and him comforting her, and being the only one who realizes she's nervous. Nicely done.

yeah, it seemed like the kind of intimate yet not necessarily romantic gesture these two are so good at. ;) Thanks for reading!

So true. Kind of like how throughout the series they're always giving each other looks-- you could argue it's nothing, argue it's intimate... I love it. :)

I think they'll be taking baby steps toward normalcy long after Feelings are declared. I just don't see how it would work realistically any other way. (Although of course I'd love it if the writers proved me wrong. XD)

Thanks for reading!

Great balance of shippiness and in-chracterness. The reason I have trouble reading a lot of het fic is that writers tend to put in too much fluff and make the characters somewhat unrecognizable.
Hippie Geek Girl: HIMYM - shoulder leangypsyjr on October 25th, 2008 01:33 am (UTC)
Thanks! I do try to keep that 'edge' that they have, but it's up to you guys to judge if I've done it right. :)

This is really sweet. Seriously, I'm like grinning. They're so in-character, and it's just lovely. Wish I could be more coherant, but the IC fluff has melted my brain. :P Good job!
